Newyork, U.S.A – Nearly eight decades after the United Nations was created to help prevent another global war, President William Samoei Ruto has placed one of the organisation’s most enduring sources of power at the centre of the debate.
Addressing the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, President Ruto questioned whether a global security system designed in the aftermath of the Second World War can adequately represent a world that has changed dramatically since 1945.
“On the gravest war of peace and security five nations possess power no other state can produce,” said President William Ruto. In a speech tailored to lobby for more African Voices in the United Nations Security Council, the Kenyan president did not stick to the “usual script” to balance the power.
“We are permanently discussed, yet permanently discriminated,” said Ruto. “International law can be invoked loudly in one crisis, cautiously in another crisis, and disregarded when convenient.”
“Every perceived double standard carries a price, and that price is trust, ” lauded Ruto. “When institutional trusted with peace fail, it is the children who bear the burden.”
President Ruto said the world has transformed but underscored that the Security Council has not. He added that, “The test of equality does not end with institutions that govern peace; it extends to the institutions that shape prosperity.”
President Ruto also questioned whether the international financial system gives every nation a fair opportunity to secure its citizens’ well-being. He further stated that the global public debt reached US$ 102 trillion in 2024, and developing countries accounted for less than a third of the debt yet paid more than a trillion dollars in interest on debt.
