Notably, Nandi-Ndaitwah has been a passionate advocate for women’s empowerment and national unity. She also boasts of decades of experience in public service.  In her victory speech, she expressed her deep appreciation for the support of the Namibian people, particularly women and girls, and emphasized the importance of inclusive leadership.
“This victory is not just mine; it belongs to every Namibian, especially the women and girls who dared to dream of a future where they, too, can lead,”  stated Nandi-Ndaitwah.

Meanwhile, bouts of tension were experienced in certain parts of the country. Tensions flared in certain regions due to significant logistical failures reported by the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN). Shortages of ballot papers and malfunctioning electronic tablets caused delays, leaving many voters standing in long queues for hours. These issues sparked complaints and protests, leading to an extension of voting hours in some areas.

Opposition candidate Panduleni Itula, from the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC), raised concerns over alleged electoral malpractice, claiming that the logistical failures were indicative of irregularities.

In a statement released after the election, Itula accused the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) of failing to address logistical challenges, such as the extension of voting in several locations, which he claimed were indicative of irregularities.

Despite these accusations, the ECN has upheld the integrity of the electoral process, even though some international observers noted some logistical hurdles but found no evidence of widespread electoral fraud.

Namibia embarks on a new era under the leadership of President Nandi-Ndaitwah. Her presidency marks a historic moment, presenting a unique opportunity to address critical challenges such as economic revitalization, job creation, and the adverse effects of climate change. Nandi-Ndaitwah’s administration is poised to prioritize gender equality, poverty reduction, and the creation of a more equitable and prosperous future for all Namibians.

Nandi-Ndaitwah’s election as Namibia’s first female president is a groundbreaking moment not just for the country, but for the African continent as a whole, and offers a powerful example of what can be achieved when women are given the opportunity to lead at the highest levels of government.

Speaking to the Liberal News Network, Imali said, “COP29 is drawing to a close, but a lot remains unresolved! We need an ambitious #NCQG that truly meets the needs of those most affected by the climate crisis.”

Ngusale also emphasized the urgency for a robust NCQG framework that prioritizes the needs of vulnerable communities. The NCQG, anchored in Article 2 of the Paris Agreement, aims to cap global temperature rises at 1.5°C, enhance resilience to climate impacts, and align financial flows with sustainable development, all while safeguarding food security.

Adding his voice to the conversation, Emmanuel Lekishon, a UNFPA Youth Champion from Kenya and ACHCGA co-founder, highlighted the stakes for frontline communities. Lekishon also said, “My community remains at the frontlines of climate disaster, and the NCQG deliberations could be our last hope.”

The NCQG holds transformative potential, but its realization faces significant hurdles. Among these are the lack of global consensus and the chronic shortfall in financing commitments. These gaps not only undermine the Paris Agreement’s objectives but also exacerbate the vulnerabilities of those living at the intersection of climate change and socioeconomic inequities.

ACHCGA has consistently called for actionable deliverables at COPs, with a focus on equity in climate financing, clear roadmaps for implementation, and grassroots participation in decision-making. “The success of the NCQG will depend on whether it reflects the realities and aspirations of those most affected by climate change,” Ngusale reiterated.

As COP29 concludes, ACHCGA remains steadfast in advocating for climate justice and ambitious NCQGs, urging states to bridge divides and deliver solutions that resonate with those bearing the brunt of the climate crisis.

This latest coup attempt, reportedly backed by foreign elements, has been met with widespread condemnation, particularly directed at France and its allies, who have long been accused of meddling in the affairs of West African nations.

Captain Ibrahim Traoré, who came to power in a popular coup in September 2022, has since become a beacon of Pan-Africanism, advocating for Burkina Faso’s self-determination and rejecting neo-colonial influences. His leadership has been marked by a strong stance against external interference, a position that has earned him both admiration and enmity on the global stage.

The failed coup is seen by many as not just an attack on Traoré, but on the very essence of Burkina Faso’s quest for autonomy. For decades, France has maintained a significant influence over its former colonies in West Africa, often through military presence and economic control. The shame of this latest attempt lies in the apparent complicity of foreign powers in trying to destabilize a government that refuses to be a puppet of external interests.

Traoré’s survival of 16 coup attempts is a testament to his resilience and the support he commands among the Burkinabé people. It highlights the growing discontent across Africa with foreign intervention and the desire for true independence. The failure of these coup attempts also underscores the strength of the grassroots movements that continue to rally behind Traoré, signaling that the people of Burkina Faso are determined to chart their own path forward.

As the dust settles on this latest failed attempt, it is clear that Captain Ibrahim Traoré remains a formidable force, one that foreign powers and their local allies have underestimated at their peril. The repeated coups serve as a stark reminder of the ongoing struggle for sovereignty in Africa, and the shame of those who seek to subvert it.

Kalonzo Musyoka, former Vice President and current leader of the Wiper political party voiced strong objections, claiming that 1 trillion Kenyan Shillings (USD 7.7 billion) of the proposed financial budget would “finance corruption.”

“As concerned citizens, we want a blatant disregard of the 2024 Financial Bill,” said Musyoka while speaking at a press conference. “The rising digital activism among Kenyans as a clear indication of widespread discontent with the bill.”

Martha Karua, leader of the Narc Kenya party and a prominent figure in the Azimio la Umoja coalition, also echoed Musyoka’s sentiments.

“The Finance Bill 2024 will bring more pain to Kenyans if it sails through the National Assembly without amendments,” warned Karua.

She also emphasized that budgeting is about making the right choices that prioritize the welfare and safety of the people, not about funding the Executive.

Karua also said,  ” Leaders must make choices that can lead to a much safer Kenya must be based on true reference and respect for the people,” she added.

Adding to the opposition’s proposals, Edwin Sifuna from the Orange Democratic Movement announced a ban on travel for their Members of Parliament during the debate on the 2024 Financial Bill. This move represents the coalition’s commitment to actively opposing the bill within parliamentary proceedings.

Accordingly, Jeremiah Kioni of the Jubilee Party also expressed his disdain, stating, “The budget seems to have been made by crooks.” His statement reflects the deep mistrust and frustration among opposition leaders regarding the integrity of the budgetary process and the Executive.

Whether the views of the Azimio la Umoja coalition will be used to debate the Financial Bill by Members of Parliament will only be told with time. Meanwhile, many Kenyans, continue to express concern among many Kenyans who fear the economic and social repercussions of the proposed budget.

Speaking at the prestigious United States International University-Africa, Mudavadi said, “We all live in a world that has too many parts, and are now in need for a strategic approach.”

Mudavadi argued  that the current system, is riddled with “uncomfortable truths” where millions of children out of school, and landlocked African nations find themselves in persistent regional instability.

“Kenya,” he asserted, is determined to be a “brother’s keeper” in Africa, actively pursuing peace in “troubled regions” like the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan, and Somalia.

Beyond Military Might: A Diverse Approach

“Gone are the days of grand strategies solely focused on military muscle,” Mudavadi emphasized.
“Kenya’s approach prioritizes economic and diplomatic tools to secure  national interests.” This, aligns with President William Ruto’s vision.

Mudavadi  insisted that the concept of a “grand strategy” itself is a departure from traditional Kenyan discourse, typically confined to academic circles. He stressed the importance of strategic thinking in today’s volatile and ambiguous foreign relations environment.

Non-Alignment and Global Engagement

Kenya’s grand strategy champions non-alignment, a core tenet of its foreign policy.
“We have no eternal allies and we have no perpetual enemies,” Mudavadi declared, while quoting Lord Palmerston 1784–1865   famous quote, Our interests are eternal and perpetual, and those interests are our duty to pursue.

Kenya’s proactive stance is not without its supporters. Not so long ago, it was said by President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua  that Kenya has no permanent enemies or permanent friends in politics, only permanent interests.

A Pivotal Moment for Kenya

As the world order undergoes a significant shift, Kenya’s grand strategy offers a compelling vision for navigating these uncertain times. By prioritizing economic diplomacy, regional peacebuilding, and strategic non-alignment, Kenya seeks to secure its own interests while contributing to a more stable and prosperous Africa. This, audacious plan will be closely watched by the international community, eager to see if Kenya can successfully chart a course in a “hanging world.

Addressing delegates on Monday, President Ruto reiterated a stark reality – African nations bear a disproportionate burden, paying five times more for their debt, driven by a complex interplay of real and perceived risk factors. His emphasis on the necessity for adjustments to debt treatment underscored the gravity of the economic challenges faced by the continent.

President Ruto, offering Kenya’s perspective, outlined a vision of transitioning away from fossil fuels and significantly increasing renewable energy sources by 2030. This, he argued, aligns with the global imperative to forge a climate-safe path. The President emphasized Africa’s commitment to raising its renewable capacity from 56 GW to at least 300 GW by 2030, a target set during the inaugural Africa Climate Summit in Nairobi in September 2023.

However, he poignantly highlighted the hurdles faced by Africa in securing appropriate capital, citing that out of the $3 trillion invested globally over the past two decades, a mere $60 billion reached the continent. President Ruto stressed that despite the potential of renewable energy to propel industrialization, Africa remained disadvantaged in accessing the necessary financial resources.

The President’s mention of the staggering statistic – approximately 600 million people in sub-Saharan Africa lack access to electricity – underscored the pressing need for reform. Additionally, he drew attention to the fact that 1 billion Africans still lack access to clean cooking facilities, emphasizing the urgency to reshape the energy landscape for improved living conditions.

While President Ruto acknowledged that Africa’s renewable capacity target might seem modest compared to the global goal, he argued that it could serve as a catalyst for creating a vibrant, self-sustaining economy. Such a transformation, he asserted, could inspire the youth to stay and contribute to their home countries, necessitating a commitment to a collaborative approach.

Inviting Italy to participate in Africa’s green initiatives, President Ruto proposed partnerships, highlighting initiatives such as the Africa Green Industrialization Initiative (AGII) and the Accelerated Partnership for Renewables in Africa. He extended an invitation for Italy to co-host an Investment Forum with the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), providing an avenue for Italian companies and financial institutions to explore investment opportunities and shape a conducive policy environment.

President Ruto also  urged sustained efforts to mature the ideas launched during COP28 in Dubai, emphasizing the critical role of reforms in Global Financial Architecture. As he called for Italy’s support in its capacity as the G7 Presidency, the President conveyed a serious and resolute commitment to advancing the shared goals of Africa and the global community.
